Worship - Sacrifice of Praise

"Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name." Hebrews 13:15 presents a direct instruction for believers to offer an unceasing sacrifice of praise to God, specifically identifying this sacrifice as the vocal acknowledgment of God's name, all of which is made effective through Jesus Christ.
The concept of "sacrifice of praise" would have resonated deeply with the original audience, who were familiar with the Old Testament sacrificial system. In the Old Covenant, animal sacrifices were central to worship and atonement, often offered for specific transgressions or as expressions of thanksgiving. Over time, particularly in prophetic literature (e.g., Hosea 14:2, Psalms 50:14,23; 69:30-31), "the fruit of lips" or vocal praise began to be recognized as a legitimate and highly valued offering. After the destruction of the Second Temple and the cessation of animal sacrifices, oral praise became even more prominent. This passage in Hebrews reconfigures this tradition, emphasizing that while external sacrifices are no longer required due to Christ's definitive atonement, praise remains a continuous and acceptable offering. It is established in the new covenant not through a Temple ritual, but through the ongoing mediation of Jesus, who is both the perfect high priest and the ultimate sacrifice, thereby making the worshiper's praise holy and permissible in God's sight.
This understanding profoundly shapes present-day worship. Our expressions of praise are not simply emotional outbursts or perfunctory recitations; they are intentional acts, infused with spiritual significance because they are presented through Jesus. Every word of adoration, every song of gratitude, is gathered by Christ, our true high priest, and presented to God as a pure and acceptable offering. This means that sincere vocal praise, originating from a heart that acknowledges God's name, is a continuous act of devotion that holds as much weight and spiritual reality in the new covenant as the most elaborate Temple sacrifices did in the old, precisely because it is channeled "through him."
