Worldly People Cause Divisions

Jude writes, "It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit." Divisions within the church are not merely disagreements among believers, nor are they the result of differing opinions on matters of lesser importance. Jude identifies the people who cause these divisions as fundamentally distinct from true followers of Christ. They are characterized by their adherence to worldly principles and their lack of the indwelling Holy Spirit. This spiritual emptiness is the root cause of their divisive actions.
To understand Jude's warning, we must recall the context of early Christian communities. They faced external persecution and internal threats from false teachers who infiltrated their ranks. These deceivers often promised a deeper knowledge or a release from moral constraints, drawing people away from the apostolic teachings. Jude’s strong language distinguishes between those who are genuinely struggling in their faith and those who are actively undermining the body of Christ. Such individuals operated according to their own carnal desires rather than the Spirit's leading, creating factions and schisms.
This discernment is crucial for us today. When we encounter divisions within the church, we are called to examine their source. Is it a genuine striving for truth, or is it rooted in selfish ambition, worldly ideologies, or a rejection of biblical authority? True unity is not uniformity but a Spirit-led harmony that prioritizes Christ's glory and the well-being of the body. We must pray for discernment to recognize those who, though they may appear to be part of the community, are in fact driven by worldly motivations and are devoid of the Spirit's unifying presence. Our worship and fellowship should reflect the Spirit's work, not worldly strife.
