Wild Waves, Wandering Stars

The Apostle Jude describes false teachers as “wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.” These vivid metaphors paint a picture of utter instability and self-destruction. False teachers are not just mistaken; they are actively harmful, driven by their own corrupt desires. Their teachings are not solid truth but the tumultuous, ephemeral foam of their own depravity, brought to the surface for all to see. They are like ships without rudders, tossed about by their own passions, and in their wake, they leave confusion and spiritual wreckage.
In the ancient world, navigation relied heavily on the predictability of the stars. To call someone a "wandering star" was to identify them as an anomaly, something that deviates from the established, reliable path. Unlike the fixed stars that guided mariners and marked the seasons, these wandering stars—likely a reference to planets or comets, which appear to move irregularly—offered no true guidance. Instead, they led people astray. This imagery would have resonated deeply with a Jewish audience familiar with the idea of a Messiah as the "Morning Star" (Revelation 22:16) and false prophets as those who lead God's people away from the light of His truth. Their trajectory, though seemingly bright for a moment, is ultimately toward an eternal darkness, a fate contrasted with the enduring light of righteousness.
For us today, this teaching calls for sharp spiritual discernment. Just as a sailor avoids treacherous waves and unreliable stars, we must guard against teachings that do not align with the fixed, unchangeable truth of God's Word. When we encounter doctrines or individuals who promote instability, self-promotion, or who deviate from the clear path of biblical doctrine, we are to recognize them for what they are: sources of spiritual danger. Our hope and security are found not in the shifting sands of human opinion or the erratic brilliance of false teachers, but in the steadfast light of Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
