The Church's Loss of Power in a Post-Christian World

"I hold this against you: you have forsaken the love you had at first... repent and do the things you did at first" (Revelation 2:4-5). The church at Ephesus hadn't lost its doctrine - it had lost its devotion. The early church's power wasn't organizational; it came from exactly what Revelation 2 says was being forsaken. Acts 2:44-47 describes what that devotion looked like in practice: believers together, holding everything in common, devoted to teaching, fellowship, and prayer - a community so distinct it drew people in daily. That kind of power isn't recovered through better programs. It's recovered the way Revelation 2:5 says: repentance, and returning to what was true at first.
This matters because if the church has lost power today, the answer Revelation gives isn't a new strategy - it's returning to a first love that was never supposed to fade.
