Everyone Is Broken — The Starting Point of the Gospel

"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Ps 34:18). This verse reveals a foundational truth about God's character: He is intimately present with those who are in distress, suffering from deep emotional pain and spiritual despondency. His nearness signifies not just proximity, but active care and intervention, offering salvation or deliverance to those who are overwhelmed by their circumstances. It posits that far from being repelled by human suffering, God is drawn to it with compassion and a desire to heal.
In the ancient Near East, a "broken heart" or "crushed spirit" often conveyed a profound state of helplessness and despair, often linked to misfortune, injustice, or a sense of divine abandonment. Psalm 34, a wisdom psalm, frequently contrasts the righteous and the wicked, and the assurance given here to the brokenhearted would have been a source of immense comfort.
