Where Did Demons Come From? The Nephilim Backstory

Scripture describes lesser dark powers that travel in numbers — ravenous, countless, agents of a higher dark intelligence. They are not the singular great evil; they are its minions. In the biblical worldview, demons function exactly this way: numerous, hungry, serving something far larger than themselves.
Where did biblical demons originate? Most Christians are taught about one rebellion – the fall in Eden (Genesis 3). But Scripture records three cosmic insurrections by supernatural beings against God’s purposes (BOK Post 7). The second of these (Genesis 6:1–4) describes how a cadre of God's celestial sons overstepped a boundary they had no business crossing (Jude 6), producing the Nephilim giants. These giants spread forbidden knowledge, bloodshed, and idolatry. When these Nephilim giants died, their hybrid spirits had no proper place in the realm of the dead. These restless, homeless spirits are what Jesus' contemporaries called demons: “unclean spirits,” labelled “unclean” because of their mixed origin and their restless, hungry state.
This is why in the Gospels demon-possessed people gravitate to tombs and deserts (Matt 8:28; Luke 8:29)—the same wilderness associated with death, Sheol, and Azazel (Lev 16:7–10). When the demon-possessed man of the Gerasenes is asked his name, the answer is “Legion” — many (Luke 8:30—BOK Post 8). The Bible's demonic horde is individually dangerous, collectively overwhelming, and always serving a higher intelligence (BOK Post 10).

This verse supports the concept of celestial beings violating boundaries, consistent with the origin of the Nephilim.
The Bible describes a real, unseen conflict with these dark powers. Stay sober-minded and watchful (1 Peter 5:8—BOK Post 2), knowing that while defeated, they still prowl, and our victory stands firm in Christ's finished work.
