The Lord's Supper and the Posture of Hope

“God has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet 1:3). This verse explains that the foundation of a Christian's hope is not merely a wish or an optimistic feeling, but a new birth brought about by God through the historical event of Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead. This hope is therefore not dependent on human effort or circumstances, but on divine intervention and power.
The early church, like its Jewish predecessors, understood the profound significance of "firstfruits" (1 Cor 15:20) as a pledge and guarantee of a future harvest. Just as the first portion of a crop indicated the rest would follow, Christ’s resurrection as the "firstfruits" assures believers of their own future resurrection. This historical truth grounds the faith that "is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb 11:1). The disciples initially struggled to grasp the purpose of the crucifixion, only understanding its redemptive power after the resurrection clarified God's grand plan. This shift in understanding was crucial; without the resurrection, the proclaimed death of Jesus (1 Cor 11:26), remembered in the Lord’s Supper, would lack its ultimate power and promise.
Therefore, participating in the Lord's Supper is an active declaration of faith, not in what is immediately visible, but in what has been promised and demonstrated through Christ's resurrection. We eat and drink, remembering a death that was conquered, empowered by a resurrection that guarantees our future, and anticipating a return that will bring about the full realization of God's kingdom. This ritual act grounds our hope in an objective historical event and a future certainty, enabling us to live in the present with a profound, living hope.
