Adopted Back Into the Family of God

The gospel reveals that God always has loved us, not that it persuades Him to love us. Romans 5:8 states, "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." This means that God’s love for humanity is not contingent upon their moral purity or spiritual righteousness. Rather, His love is proactively demonstrated even while individuals are in a state of sin and rebellion against Him. The grace extended through Christ’s sacrifice is a testament to this unconditional, initiating love.
In the ancient world, adoption, particularly of adult males, often signified an elevation in status or the securing of an heir. For the early readers of Paul’s letters, to be adopted by God as His children through Christ, as referenced in Galatians 4:5, "to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons," and Ephesians 1:5, was a profound declaration. This concept contrasted sharply with the legalistic frameworks prevalent in both Jewish and Roman societies, where familial status or belonging was often tied to birthright, law, or societal standing. God's act of adopting individuals, irrespective of their past, signified a radical inclusion and a new identity forged solely by divine grace. John’s exclamation in 1 John 3:1, "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are," further underscores the astonishing nature of this spiritual transformation and new relationship with the Creator.
