We Are Ambassadors: The Mission of the Church

God's original intention for Eden was expansion. Adam and Eve were to fill the earth, making the rest of the world like Eden — God's presence spreading through his image-bearing people. The fall did not cancel that plan. It redirected it. Through Israel, fulfilled in Jesus, continuing now through the church.
Wherever brokenness had taken root in humanity, God determined that his good news would take root there too — reaching the very places evil had reached first. We're not bystanders in that plan; we represent the truth about the God of gods, his love for every nation, and his unshaken intention to bring his family home. Eden will live again.
This is what it means to be an ambassador for Christ (2 Cor 5:20). Not a religious activist — an ambassador. A representative of another kingdom, living here on assignment, whose job is reconciliation: bringing God's estranged children back into his family. “God… gave us the ministry of reconciliation… We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us” (2 Cor 5:18–20).

    All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

    But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

    How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
