The Church: A New Family With a New Identity

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Cor 5:17). This verse declares that a radical, transformative change occurs in an individual who becomes united with Christ. Their former existence and identity are superseded by a divinely initiated new reality.
The concept of a "new creation" carries significant weight within the biblical narrative, particularly as it relates to the eschatological expectations of the Jewish people. Prophecies in the Old Testament, such as Isaiah 65:17, speak of God creating "new heavens and a new earth," signaling a complete renewal and restoration. In the New Testament, this future cosmic renewal is inaugurated spiritually in the believer through Christ. Instead of being defined by earthly lineage or societal structures, believers are redefined by their spiritual rebirth, an identity rooted in the redemptive work of Jesus—similar to how John 3 speaks of being "born again" not of natural descent but of the Spirit. This new identity transcends physical ties, establishing a family based on faith in Christ rather than biological relationships, as seen in passages that elevate spiritual kinship above earthly family (e.g., Matt 12:46–50).
This profound spiritual transformation into a "new creation" fundamentally reorients a person’s relationship with the world. Being "in Christ" means that one’s values, priorities, and ultimate allegiance are no longer solely derived from worldly norms or expectations. Instead, they are shaped by the kingdom of God, leading to a life that often runs contrary to societal conventions. This altered perspective is not merely an intellectual assent but a complete reshaping of one's being, resulting in a distinct way of living and relating to others that reflects the character and purposes of God. Because of this spiritual rebirth, the individual is set apart and empowered to live out a calling that reflects this new reality rather than conformity to the world’s passing forms.
