Providence: God Turns Evil to Good

The Scripture states, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (Gen 50:20). This powerful declaration from Joseph to his brothers reveals a profound truth: even in the face of human malice and wicked intentions, God possesses the sovereign ability to redirect and reframe those very actions for His benevolent purposes. It means that what humans orchestrate for destruction, God can orchestrate for salvation and flourishing.
This concept of divine providence, where God’s overarching plan is realized even amidst human sin, finds deep roots in the biblical narrative. Joseph's life, from being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, to his unjust imprisonment, and ultimately his rise to power in Egypt, serves as a comprehensive illustration of this principle. The evil acts committed against him were not impediments to God's plan but rather integral, albeit sinful, steps in the unfolding of a larger divine design to preserve a nation from famine. The ancient Near Eastern understanding of divine oversight often attributed both good and ill fortune to the gods, but here, the distinction is made clear: human intent was evil, but God’s subsequent redirection was good.
The ultimate and most profound expression of this truth is found in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As Acts 2:23 proclaims, "This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men." Here, the most heinous act of human depravity—the murder of the Son of God—is explicitly stated to be in accordance with the "definite plan and foreknowledge of God." This does not absolve human responsibility for sin, but rather demonstrates God's perfect sovereignty. His love is not thwarted by human depravity; instead, it works through it, bringing about the greatest good—salvation—through the very act of crucifixion that appeared to be history’s greatest failure.
