Sin Always Harms in Ways We Didn't Foresee

People rarely intend catastrophe. They pursue knowledge, power, or pleasure — often forbidden, often at the expense of others — without meaning to unleash the chaos that follows. But the harm comes anyway. That is the point. Human pride and rebellion tear open doors we never meant to open, leading to outcomes far beyond our foresight. 
Scripture is blunt about this: sin's damage rarely stays contained to what we intended, and the wreckage it leaves is real, not hypothetical. "Desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death" (Jas 1:15). There is a direct, destructive progression from internal desire to external catastrophe. 
The human heart, says the prophet Jeremiah, is "deceitful above all things, and desperately sick" (Jer 17:9). As BOK teaches, 'the flesh' isn't just the body but 'any thought pattern, appetite, vanity, or predilection that opposes God's will.' When our hearts are set on the flesh, we cannot trust our own instincts about what is harmless. We go astray, every one of us, seeking autonomy instead of accountability (Isa 53:6). This pursuit of self-determination – of being one's own god – is not merely a bad choice. It is the oldest sin, leading to a catastrophic spread of 'forbidden knowledge, bloodshed, idolatry, and corruption,' as Genesis 6 shows with its account of widespread wickedness and God's sorrow over human evil (Gen 6:5). The damage runs far beyond what we can foresee.
