Estrangement from God Is Not Your Natural State

Estrangement from God isn't how humanity was designed to exist - it's the unnatural result of the fall. Eden was meant to be permanent: humanity living in God's presence, enjoying uninterrupted relationship with him. Genesis 3:22-24 records the rupture - Adam and Eve driven from that presence, cut off from the tree of life. Paul traces the consequence directly to death itself: sin entered, and death spread to everyone (Romans 5:12). Before Christ, Gentiles were, in Paul's words, "separated from Christ... having no hope and without God in the world" (Ephesians 2:12) - genuinely cut off, not merely distant.
This matters because your estrangement from God was never the plan - it's the wound the gospel exists to heal.
