The Image of God Is a Calling, Not a Quality

"So God created mankind in his own image... male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). Being made in God's image was never primarily about possessing some fixed inner quality - it's a role, a calling. In the ancient world, kings set up images - statues - in territories to represent their rule there. God's declaration in Genesis 1:26, "let us make mankind in our image," installs humanity the same way: as his representatives, tasked with extending his rule in the world he made. That calling doesn't disappear at the fall - it's something to be restored. Romans 8:29 describes exactly that restoration: believers are being "conformed to the image of his Son" - growing back into the calling humanity was always meant to fulfill.
This matters because your identity was never about achievement or ability - it's a calling given at creation, being restored in Christ.
