Union with Christ - Participation

Christian identity can be plainly understood as an intimate union with Christ. This profound statement means that through faith, we are united with Jesus Christ himself. This spiritual union is the very foundation of who we are as believers, forming the core of our new existence in God.
To be "in Christ" signifies a participation in his death and resurrection. This isn't merely a metaphorical idea, but a spiritual reality where his crucifixion becomes our crucifixion, and his new life becomes our new life. As Galatians 2:20 declares, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” This verse directly articulates that our former self has died with Christ, and now a new life, empowered by Christ, lives within us. This participation is how we receive a new identity, one granted by God's grace.
This understanding is profoundly important because it differentiates Christian identity from mere self-improvement cloaked in religious words. Our identity isn't about our efforts to become better, but about a radical transformation already accomplished through our union with Christ. Because we are crucified with Christ, his death and resurrection truly define our new life, establishing a complete and gracious change in who we are and how we live. Our life is now to be lived by faith in the Son of God, not by our own striving.
