Ungodly Lack the Spirit

“It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.” Jude’s stark warning in verse 19 identifies a specific characteristic of those who threaten the church: they are the source of division. This isn't merely about differing opinions, but about a fundamental spiritual state. These individuals are described as “worldly people,” indicating their perspective and priorities are rooted in the temporal rather than the eternal. The ultimate indictment, however, is that they are “devoid of the Spirit,” signifying a complete absence of God’s indwelling presence and guidance.
To understand this, we must recall the larger context of Jude’s epistle. He is writing to believers who are contending for the faith against certain intruders who have stealthily crept into the fellowship. These false teachers or corrupt members were characterized by immorality, rebellion against authority, and a distortion of grace. The division they cause is not accidental; it stems from their unregenerate nature. Unlike true believers who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9), these individuals operate purely on human reasoning and carnal desires, leading to discord and fracturing within the community that is meant to be united in Christ.
This understanding sharpens our discernment and strengthens our resolve to guard the unity of the Spirit. When we encounter teachings or behaviors that sow discord, reject established and sound doctrine, and promote self-serving agendas, Jude encourages us to recognize their root cause. It calls us to introspection, ensuring our own lives are indeed led by the Spirit, producing fruits of love, joy, peace, and patience, rather than division and strife. It also reminds us that true spiritual unity is not a human achievement but a divine endowment, protected and fostered by walking in step with the Holy Spirit and upholding the truth of the gospel.
