Ezekiel 26:20 describes the divine judgment awaiting Tyre using vivid and chilling imagery. God declares that Tyre will "go down with those who go down to the pit" and dwell "in the nether regions." This is not merely a picture of military defeat or political decline, but of a complete and irreversible end. The "pit" and "nether regions" are ancient Near Eastern concepts for the realm of the dead, a place from which there is no return. To "go down" there with the "people of old" implies a cessation of life and influence so thorough that it mirrors the permanence of death.
The prophetic language here is crucial for understanding God’s judgment upon wicked nations. Unlike the temporary judgments or exiles faced by God's covenant people, which often held the promise of restoration, the judgment against Tyre is described in terms that suggest an absolute termination. Tyre will not be "inhabited or have a place in the land of the living." This emphasizes the finality of its demise as a powerful and influential entity. While individual believers always have the hope of salvation and resurrection, the fate of nations that defiantly reject God's ways can be one of complete and lasting destruction, losing their place among viable and flourishing entities. It warns against placing ultimate hope in earthly power and influence, encouraging us instead to seek righteous living and God's enduring kingdom.
