My Name Is in Him

"Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way... pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him."
Two things in that sentence should stop you. First, this angel can decline to pardon sin - a prerogative Scripture never hands to a created being. Second, the reason given: my name is in him.
In Hebrew thought the Name is not a label. It is "the hypostatic extension of divine identity" - the presence of the divine person, not a word for him. Jews still speak this way: God is called Hashem, the Name.
So an angel carrying Yahweh's Name within himself is not a subordinate on an errand. He is how Yahweh is present. Paraphrase God's meaning bluntly: that's me, too.
