the old label is not lord

Heiser's comment on this verse is not sentimental. "The old life is dead. You have to think this way moment by moment, day by day." And then he adds the part we usually miss: this is actually what Scripture means by the renewing of your mind.
So the renewed mind is not positive thinking. It is repeatedly refusing a verdict that has already been overturned. Paul says the same thing three ways - I have been crucified with Christ, we were united with him in a death like his, the old has passed away. New creation is not a feeling you wait for. It is a fact you keep telling yourself.
