Thankfulness - Holy Remembrance

DEVOTIONAL POST · WORSHIP

Ready-To-Post Teaching

"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." This command from Psalm 103:2 instructs the soul to praise God and, in doing so, to actively recall and hold fast to the memory of His benevolent acts. It establishes a direct link between the act of blessing God and the discipline of remembering His goodness.

In the ancient Near East, communal memory and recitation played a vital role in preserving identity and faith. For the Israelites, remembering God's *hesed* (loyal love, steadfast love, mercy) was foundational to their covenant relationship. This remembering was not merely cognitive recall but a re-presentation of past events that shaped their present and future. The psalmist's call to "forget not all his benefits" echoes the Old Testament's frequent admonitions against forgetting God's deliverance and provision, drawing a parallel to the recurring cycles of obedience and disobedience tied to Israel's memory of God's works.

Therefore, cultivating a practice of biblical thankfulness—one that actively rehearses God's works—is a discipline that profoundly shapes the spiritual life. This intentional act prevents the heart from growing dull or wandering into forgetfulness of God’s mercy, compassion, and faithful care. As one consistently calls to mind the particular ways God has acted, faith is strengthened, and a deeper assurance of His ongoing goodness takes root in the soul, fostering resilience and trust.
