Stay in God's Love

Jude exhorts us, saying, "Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life." This is not a command to *earn* God's love, as if it were conditional upon our performance; rather, it is an imperative to remain within the sphere of His demonstrated affection and covenant faithfulness. It is an active embrace of the divine grace already extended to us through Christ. We are called to consciously abide in the knowledge and experience of that unmerited favor, cultivating a life that reflects its transformative power.
This epistle is a stern warning against false teachers and apostasy that subtly crept into the early church, corrupting believers from within. In contrast to those who had abandoned God's love and revelled in impurity, Jude calls believers to a steadfast endurance. The imperative to "keep yourselves" implies a diligent perseverance in faith and obedience amidst such spiritual threats. It is a dual call: to actively resist the allure of error while steadfastly clinging to the truth and the hope of Christ's return, which is the ultimate culmination of God's mercy.
To keep ourselves in God's love means to live in grateful response to His initiating grace. It involves continually recentering our lives on the finished work of Christ, recognizing that our standing is secure not because of our efforts, but because of His mercy. This perspective fuels our worship, deepens our discernment against deceptive doctrines, and anchors our hope in the assured promise of eternal life. It challenges us to reflect God's love in our relationships, our ethics, and our daily choices, living as those who are truly loved and eagerly awaiting the full manifestation of His glorious mercy.
