Ephesians 2:19-22 declares, "So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit." This passage reveals a profound truth about our identity and purpose in Christ. We are not merely isolated individuals, but integral parts of a divine structure, transformed from outsiders to insiders, from foreigners to family. This structure is not a physical edifice of stone and mortar, but a living, spiritual temple, continually growing and being perfected in the Lord, with each believer playing a vital role.
Historically, the temple in Jerusalem was the central place of worship and the perceived dwelling place of God among His people. It was a magnificent structure, rich in symbolism, signifying God's presence and the means of atonement. However, with the coming of Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the nature of God's dwelling place radically changed. This passage in Ephesians clarifies that the true temple is now composed of believers, built upon the unshakeable foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the indispensable cornerstone. This signifies a shift from a localized, physical sanctuary to a universal, spiritual reality, where God's presence indwells His people collectively through the Holy Spirit. The 'whole structure' refers to the entire body of believers, Jew and Gentile alike, united in Christ, forming a holy sanctuary where God resides.
For us today, this understanding profoundly impacts our view of ourselves and the church. We are not just attendees of a building, but living stones actively being built into God's dwelling place. This calls us to a life of holiness, reflecting the sanctity of the God who lives within us and among us. Our interactions, our service, and our very lives become acts of worship within this spiritual temple. Let us embrace our identity as fellow citizens and members of God's household, recognizing that we are continually being shaped and joined together by the Spirit, growing into a holy temple that glorifies God and manifests His presence to a watching world. Live as a dwelling place for God, remembering that His Spirit resides within you and in the community of believers.
