Snatching from Fire Is Not Lake of Fire

In Jude 23, we are exhorted to “save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.” This powerful imagery of 'snatching from the fire' speaks to the urgency and seriousness of our mission. The epistle is a stern warning against false teachers who had infiltrated the early Christian communities, corrupting believers with their godless doctrines. Jude paints a vivid picture of the judgment awaiting these apostates and those who follow them, consistently referencing Old Testament examples of divine judgment by fire, such as Sodom and Gomorrah (Jude 7). The 'fire' here refers to the pre-resurrection judgment and consequences for those who stray from the faith and embrace ungodliness during this life. It cultivates a discerning heart, enabling us to identify the subtle creeping in of false teaching and to stand firm in the truth, thereby protecting ourselves and others from the 'fire' of immediate spiritual judgment and its devastating effects.
