Scoffers in the Last Time

Jude writes, "They said to you, 'In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.'" This verse is a direct quote from the apostles, reminding believers that the presence of mockers and cynics was foretold. These aren't just people with different opinions; they are characterized by their adherence to "ungodly passions," suggesting a deliberate rejection of divine standards in favor of self-serving desires. Their scoffing is not mere intellectual disagreement but often stems from a heart set against God's truth and instruction. We are called to remember these prophetic warnings, understanding that such behavior is a sign of the times. 
The apostles' prediction of scoffers is not an isolated warning in the New Testament; it echoes throughout various epistles, highlighting a consistent concern among the early Christian leaders. For example, Peter also speaks of scoffers who will come in the last days, questioning the promise of Christ's return (2 Peter 3:3-4). This shared emphasis suggests that these warnings were a common and significant part of apostolic teaching, preparing the early church for theological challenges and moral decay. The "last time" refers to the entire period between Christ's first and second comings, a time characterized by both the spread of the Gospel and the rise of spiritual opposition. 
Knowing that scoffers and those driven by ungodly passions were predicted offers us crucial discernment in our daily lives. It fortifies our faith against those who would mock biblical truths or dismiss the call to holiness. Instead of being surprised or discouraged by such opposition, we are instead encouraged to stand firm on the foundation of apostolic teaching and Christ's example.
