Does Trial Language Make God Weak?

"The serpent said to the woman, 'You won't really die'" (Genesis 3:4). Six words, and the whole conflict is set in motion — not a contest of raw strength, but an accusation. God is a withholding liar, the serpent implies, keeping his creatures from something good out of jealousy rather than love.
At the level of sheer power, no creature could ever genuinely oppose an all-powerful being — so if this conflict were only about strength, it would already be over, and always was. Scripture instead depicts a dispute over God's moral government, over his character and his truthfulness, not his raw capability. Either the serpent is lying, or God is; Genesis 3 allows no third option, and the entire rest of the biblical story is, in one sense, the working out of which one it was. A show of executive force cannot clear a reputation under public accusation any more than a governor accused of corruption could refute the charge merely by exercising more power over his accusers — that would look like suppression, not innocence. Only an open, fair demonstration can actually settle a dispute of that kind. This is precisely why the resolution comes through the cross rather than through immediate suppression of the accuser: "God set forth Christ… to demonstrate his righteousness" (Romans 3:26), not merely to overpower an opponent by decree.
Far from making God look weak, the trial framework is the only framework strong enough to actually answer the accusation rather than merely silence it. A God secure enough in his own character to let the question be asked, let the evidence be weighed, and let the verdict be rendered in public — over centuries, before angels and nations — is not a God worried about the outcome. He is a God who already knows what the demonstration will show. "You won't really die" was the lie. The cross was the answer.
