The Divine Council as Courtroom

"I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last of all, like men sentenced to death. For we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men" (1 Corinthians 4:9). Paul describes his own sufferings in explicitly legal, theatrical language — a spectacle before a watching universe. He did not invent that courtroom register. He inherited it from a motif running through hundreds of Old Testament texts.
The council scene in Job functions as an open forum, not a secret arrangement. The plan to test Job was not hatched in a private meeting between Yahweh and the accuser behind closed doors; it was decided openly, before the assembled council. This is due process, not divine caprice acting on a whim. Daniel 7's throne-room vision follows the same pattern: a demonstration or trial always precedes the execution of judgment, never the reverse — thrones are set, books are opened, and only then does judgment fall. Zechariah 3:1-7 makes the legal register unmistakable: "He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before Yahweh's angel, and Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary" — a literal prosecutor, in a literal proceeding, rebuked directly by Yahweh himself on the priest's behalf. Revelation 4-5 carries the same courtroom-of-record structure into its throne-room vision, complete with a sealed scroll that only a slain-yet-standing Lamb is found worthy to open.
This recurring legal architecture is not incidental scenery borrowed for dramatic effect. It is how Scripture consistently frames the resolution of cosmic conflict — through open hearing, evidence, and verdict, not through force applied in the dark. Paul knew exactly what vocabulary he was reaching for when he called his own suffering a spectacle before angels and men. He was placing himself inside a courtroom that had been open since Job, its verdict already trending toward the one who would stand accused and be vindicated on a cross.
