Psalm 82 and the Problem of Injustice

"How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?" (Psalm 82:2). This is not a rhetorical question asked into a void. It is a formal indictment, spoken by God himself, against the very powers currently permitted to govern the nations.
Psalm 82 supplies a framework in which large-scale injustice is not simply the product of impersonal human systems, indifferent to good and evil alike, grinding along with no one truly accountable at the top. It is also, at least in part, the result of a real and currently ongoing failure of delegated spiritual authority — a failure God explicitly condemns rather than quietly tolerates or overlooks. The psalm's own complaint mirrors exactly the kind of protest believers are permitted, even invited, to bring before God when confronted with entrenched, systemic evil: how long will injustice be allowed to stand? And the resolution described is not indefinite, left open-ended forever. The corrupted council members are sentenced to lose their standing — "you will die like mere mortals" (Psalm 82:7) — and the psalm's closing plea for God himself to "arise" and reclaim "all the nations" as his own direct inheritance (Psalm 82:8) anticipates exactly the resurrection-and-restoration trajectory the rest of Scripture goes on to complete in full.
Injustice that looks permanent from the ground, entrenched and unmovable, is not being ignored from the throne. The same court that indicts corrupt rulers in Psalm 82 is the court whose verdict was carried out at an empty tomb — and the plea "how long," repeated in one form or another by suffering people in every generation, is a prayer Scripture itself promises, on the authority of the God who first spoke the indictment, will be answered.
