The Divine Council and Monotheism

"Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4). No verse states Israel's core confession more plainly. Does a divine council of real, created gods under Yahweh sit comfortably beside it, or does it quietly undermine it?
The biblical creation account is genuinely distinctive among ancient literature for depicting a single sovereign Creator rather than a violent contest among rival, comparably matched deities — a true and important point, underscoring that the created order has a coherent moral fabric rather than reflecting the outcome of some cosmic power struggle between roughly equal gods. But this uniqueness concerns Yahweh's incomparable status as the one uncreated Creator, not a denial that other, created spiritual beings exist at all. This is a place, worth admitting honestly, where different faithful readers weigh the emphasis differently — but the underlying grammar is not really in dispute. Psalm 82:1 uses the same Hebrew word, *elohim*, twice in a single verse — once for the God who judges, once for the gods he judges — precisely because the term functions as a category for "beings of the spiritual realm," not as an exclusive title claiming equal status. A council of real, created elohim under Yahweh's unrivaled authority does not compete with the claim that there is only one true God in the fullest sense.
Two different questions are being answered here, not one, and confusing them is where the discomfort tends to creep in: is Yahweh unique, uncreated, and without rival in being — yes, without exception, without qualification. Are there other real spiritual beings under his authority, accountable to him and judged by him when they fail — also yes. The Shema and the divine council were never meant to compete for the same territory, because they were never answering the same question in the first place; one describes who God is, the other describes who else exists beneath him.
