Peace - King Over Chaos

The Gospel of Mark 4:39-41 describes Jesus calming a violent storm. It states, "He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?'" This passage vividly demonstrates Jesus’s inherent authority over the natural world, showing His power to command the very elements that cause fear and disorder.
For the original hearers, particularly those familiar with Old Testament narratives, the control over the sea and wind was a distinctive attribute of God alone. Psalms such as 89:9 and 107:29 depict God as the one who calms the raging seas. Therefore, when Jesus, a man, performs such a feat — rebuking the wind and saying to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" — it presents a radical claim to divine identity. The disciples' terrified question, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" reflects their understanding that only the Creator possesses such dominion, highlighting a profound revelation of Jesus's nature in the context of ancient Jewish monotheism.
