Pause before anger leads

"Slow to anger" is not James's phrase. It belongs to God, all through the Hebrew Bible, and James hands it to us.
Which makes the instruction more demanding than it sounds. Being slow to anger does not mean never being angry. The study of that phrase in Scripture puts it this way: God will not become angry for just any reason - his anger answers specific betrayal, and even then he stays patient, still working to restore people. That is the standard being set. Not indifference. Slowness, with restoration as the goal.
