OT in NT 48: Word Is Near

Deuteronomy 30:14 declares that "The word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it." This means that God’s instruction, His covenant command, is not difficult to find or understand; it is accessible to everyone, dwelling within their very being. It is not something distant or hidden, but intimately present and ready to be acted upon.
The Apostle Paul, in Romans 10:6-10, applies this ancient covenant language to the gospel message. He confirms that "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart," linking this nearness to the confession of Jesus as Lord and belief in His resurrection. Paul doesn't invent a new, detached formula for salvation; instead, he interprets the established idea of the "nearness" of God's word through the work of the risen Messiah. He shows that the promise of Deuteronomy finds its ultimate fulfillment and accessibility in Christ, making salvation available through faith. He further reinforces this by quoting, in Romans 10:13, that "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
This profound connection means that the pathway to salvation is not obscure or out of reach. You don’t need to search distant lands or profound mysteries to find God's will for your life. Instead, the "word" of salvation through Jesus Christ is as close as your confession and belief. It is a personal and immediate truth that you can embrace, prompting you to call upon the Lord for salvation and affirming that you truly can “do it,” responding to God's accessible and saving grace.
