OT in NT 35: Prepare The Way

The scriptures reveal that John the Baptist served a crucial role, preparing the way for the Lord himself. Isaiah 40:3 proclaimed, "A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God," speaking of a wilderness voice that would precede the Lord's arrival. Malachi 3:1 further promised, “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple,” indicating a messenger who would clear the path for the Lord's coming to His temple. These prophetic words set the stage for a significant moment in salvation history.
The Gospel of Mark, in Mark 1:2-3, intentionally draws a direct connection between these ancient prophecies and John the Baptist: "Behold, I send my messenger before your face... the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord..." By linking Isaiah's wilderness voice and Malachi's messenger, Mark presents John as the divinely appointed forerunner to Jesus. This means that the long-awaited and promised arrival of the Lord, as foretold in the Old Testament, was unmistakably unfolding through the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.
