OT in NT 29: Day of the Lord

"The Day of the Lord" is not a singular, completed event but a process that has begun and is still unfolding. This means that while certain aspects of this significant period are already evident in the present, other crucial elements are yet to be fully realized in the future.
The prophet Joel foretold a time when God would "pour out my Spirit on all flesh... And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." This promise of the Spirit's outpouring and salvation precedes the great day of the Lord. Peter, on the day of Pentecost, declared that the dramatic events witnessed — the pouring out of the Spirit — were in fact the beginning of what Joel had prophesied, stating, "This is what was uttered through the prophet Joel... I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh..." However, the Day of the Lord is also described in 2 Peter as a future event when "The day of the Lord will come like a thief... But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth," bringing judgment and the promise of a renewed creation. Furthermore, Revelation portrays this final culmination with "The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war," indicating a decisive, righteous intervention.
This understanding of "already and not yet" is vital for comprehending biblical fulfillment.
