OT in NT 21: Revelation's Language

The book of Revelation, far from being a collection of enigmatic symbols detached from the Christian faith, primarily speaks the language of the Old Testament. This means that to understand its message, we must first recognize its deep roots in prophetic writings and established biblical imagery before attempting to interpret it through the lens of current events. When Revelation presents a vision of Christ, it draws directly from the ancient prophets.
The apostle John, the human author of Revelation, deliberately filled its pages with powerful visions and themes found in earlier scriptural texts. For example, the majestic throne room and the description of the "one like a son of man" in Revelation echo Daniel 7:9-14, which states, “The Ancient of Days took his seat... with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man... to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom.” Similarly, the glorious divine appearance described in Revelation is reminiscent of Ezekiel 1:26-28: "There was the likeness of a throne... and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance... Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD." The poignant image of seeing the pierced one and mourning comes from Zechariah 12:10, “They will look on me, on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him...” These ancient prophecies are integrated into Revelation 1:7-18, which proclaims, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds... I am the first and the last, and the living one...”, unmistakably presenting Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of these Old Testament expectations.
This understanding is critical because it teaches us to approach Revelation not as a puzzle to be solved with external clues, but as a coherent and deeply biblical work of theology. When you encounter visions of thrones, temples, beasts, divine judgment, worship, and new creation in Revelation, recognize them as the continuation and culmination of biblical themes established by the prophets of old. This perspective will strengthen your faith that Revelation is an unfolding of God’s consistent plan throughout history, deeply connected to the scriptural story we already know.
