OT in NT 19: Melchizedek

The figure of Melchizedek is not a random or obscure detail within the Biblical narrative; he appears distinctly in Genesis as "king of Salem" and "priest of God Most High" who blesses Abraham, receiving a tenth of everything from him. This clear presentation of Melchizedek immediately establishes him as a significant individual connected to both royal authority and divine worship, and as one superior to Abraham.
This initial introduction in Genesis lays groundwork that becomes profoundly important later in Scripture. Psalm 110:4 expands upon Melchizedek's significance by declaring, "The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." This psalm thus links kingship with an enduring priesthood modeled after Melchizedek. The book of Hebrews then draws these threads together, explaining Jesus' priesthood by referring to Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:1-17 shows how Melchizedek's unique position serves as a pattern for understanding Jesus' "superior priesthood" and permanent mediation, demonstrating that Jesus is "a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek."
Understanding Melchizedek illuminates the depth of Jesus’ ministry. He is not merely our King, but also our true and enduring High Priest. This means that through Jesus, the enthroned King, you have constant and perfect access to God. You can approach God with confidence, knowing that Jesus, in his unique role as both King and Priest in the order of Melchizedek, permanently brings his people near to God.
