OT in NT 18: Tabernacle Reality

The tabernacle, as described in Exodus, was not merely an earthly structure but a profound glimpse into a divine reality. Its very construction, commanded in Exodus 25:8-9, was to be "according to all that I show you," signifying that its form and function mirrored a greater, heavenly original. This earthly sanctuary was designed so that God might "dwell in their midst," making His presence accessible to His people, albeit in a shadowed form.
The New Testament confirms this understanding, particularly in the book of Hebrews, which asserts that the Old Testament priests served in a sanctuary that was a "copy and shadow of the heavenly things," as stated in Hebrews 8:5. This concept is further amplified in Hebrews 9:23-24, clarifying that Christ "has entered, not into holy places made with hands... but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf." The earthly tabernacle, with its rituals and elements like the altar and incense, finds its ultimate counterpart in God's heavenly throne-room, as depicted in Revelation 8:3-4, where the "smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God." This consistent imagery throughout scripture reveals that the tabernacle served to teach Israel that their earthly worship was always participating in a grander, eternal pattern.
Understanding the tabernacle as a shadow of heavenly reality transforms our perspective on worship itself. It teaches us that our acts of devotion are not empty rituals or hollow gestures, but rather they connect us to God's ultimate, heavenly presence.
