OT in NT 17: Son Greater Than Angels

Jesus is not merely another angelic messenger; he is the Son of God. Scripture clearly distinguishes Jesus from angels, affirming that he is the heir of all things, the very creator of the cosmos, the reigning king, and indeed the rightful object of heavenly worship. This means that Jesus belongs to a category far above any created being, including the highest angels.
The royal sonship language found in ancient prophecies, such as Psalm 2:7, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you," and 2 Samuel 7:14, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son," is specifically applied to Jesus. The Book of Hebrews underscores this by asking, "To which of the angels did God ever say, You are my Son?... Let all God's angels worship him" (Hebrews 1:5-6), highlighting that no angel ever received such a declaration of divine sonship or was commanded to be worshipped. Furthermore, Colossians 1:15-17 reveals that "By him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created through him and for him," explicitly stating that Jesus is the one through whom and for whom all creation, both visible and invisible, came into being. This confirms his unique position as Creator, distinguishing him utterly from all created beings, including angels.
This truth profoundly shapes our understanding of Christian faith because it firmly places Jesus outside the realm of created spiritual beings. Unlike angels who serve, Jesus reigns supreme over all creation. Our faith is not in a glorified angel or an elevated messenger, but in the Son of God himself, the Creator and King, who is worthy of all worship. This understanding calls us to worship Jesus with the reverence due to God alone, acknowledging his divine supremacy over all things.
