OT in NT 9: Spirit Promised

The Spirit's arrival was not a new or unexpected event but the fulfillment of an ancient hope, long prophesied in the Old Testament Scriptures. This demonstrates that God's plan for His Spirit to dwell among and within His people was established well in advance of its manifestation.
This profound expectation is rooted deeply in the prophetic books. Joel declared, "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh... And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved" (Joel 2:28-32), promising a universal outpouring and salvific grace. Ezekiel likewise foretold, "I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules" (Ezekiel 36:27), pointing to an internal transformation leading to faithful obedience. Later, in the New Testament, Peter explicitly stated that the events of Pentecost were precisely "what was uttered through the prophet Joel...I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh" (Acts 2:16-21). Paul further elaborates on this new covenant reality, explaining that "The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life... beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:6-18), underscoring the life-giving and transformative work of the Spirit.
Understanding that the Spirit's arrival was a long-awaited fulfillment shows us that His presence is not merely a peripheral aspect of faith or a subjective spiritual experience. Instead, it is the promised, central means by which God indwells His people, enables covenant faithfulness, and actively remakes us from within. This truth should deepen your expectation and appreciation for the Spirit's indwelling work, recognizing that His activity in your life is the continuation of God’s ancient plan to transform you into the Lord’s image.
