OT in NT 6: Jesus Reclaims Nations

The Great Commission, which instructs believers to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19), represents God's authoritative answer to a profound ancient rebellion. This divine directive is deeply rooted in the Old Testament framework, where Deuteronomy 32:8-9 describes how "the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance," yet "the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage." This passage sets the stage for understanding the nations as originally divided from God's direct rule, with only Israel as His chosen possession. Psalm 82:8 then expresses a fervent prayer to God, "Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!" This prayer anticipates a time when God will reclaim full dominion over all humanity. Jesus, before commanding His followers to go, declares in Matthew 28:18, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me," providing the ultimate basis for the mission. He further promises in Acts 1:8, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses... to the ends of the earth," establishing the means by which this reclamation will occur.
Understanding the Great Commission in this historical and theological light reveals that Christian mission is far more than a voluntary program or an optional activity for the church.
