OT in NT 2: Abraham and the Nations

The central truth revealed in scripture regarding Abraham is that his story was never intended to be solely about his immediate family line. Instead, the divine plan for Abraham’s family encompassed a far broader purpose for all of humanity.
The New Testament makes it clear that Abraham’s lineage was the chosen instrument through which God would reverse the confusion of Babel and extend blessings to all nations, ultimately through Christ. Genesis 12:1-3 records God's promise to Abraham: "Go from your country... and I will make of you a great nation... and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." This foundational promise guaranteed that Abraham's descendants would be a source of blessing for every family on earth. His righteousness, as described in Genesis 15:5-6, stemmed from his trust in God's promises. That trust made him the spiritual "father of us all," as Romans 4:16-17 explains, indicating that the promise rests on faith. Galatians 3:7-9 further clarifies that those who possess faith are considered children of Abraham and partake in the blessings promised to the nations through him.
This understanding profoundly shapes our faith, revealing that God's election of Abraham was inherently missional. It demonstrates that one family was chosen not for its own exclusive benefit, but for the ultimate well-being and blessing of all peoples. Therefore, as believers, we are called to embody this outward-focused purpose, recognizing that our own faith connects us to Abraham's blessing and to God's ongoing mission to bless the world.
