2 Corinthians 6:16 declares, "What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, 'I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.'" This profound statement reveals a radical reinterpretation of the temple concept. No longer is God's dwelling place confined to a physical structure, but it extends to His people. The church, as the collective body of believers, becomes the living temple where God's presence resides. This is a fulfillment of ancient promises, now realized in a new and spiritual way through the New Covenant. The very essence of God's presence is now found within His redeemed community, making them the locus of His glory on earth.
This New Testament understanding draws deeply from Old Testament prophecies, particularly those found in Ezekiel 37:26-27, where God promises, "I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
