Near is enough for today

The word translated brokenhearted here is rare. It turns up in only a couple of other places in the Hebrew Bible, and the study of it makes a striking observation: each of those instances refers to exile.
So this is not only private sadness. It is the vocabulary of being displaced, cut off, far from where you belong. And it is the same word Isaiah 61 reaches for when describing the one anointed to bind up the brokenhearted - the passage Jesus read out loud and applied to himself. God's nearness is promised precisely to people who feel furthest away.
