Myriads Upon Myriads

The prophet Daniel, caught up in a vision of divine judgment, declares that "A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened" (Daniel 7:10 ESV). This verse paints an awe-inspiring picture of God's heavenly court, teeming with countless angelic beings who are His loyal servants. John later echoes this imagery in Revelation, showing us the same countless hosts. These are not merely symbolic numbers but convey the incomprehensible magnitude of God's retinue and His ultimate, sovereign authority over all creation.
In ancient Near Eastern cultures, large numbers were often used to emphasize abundance, power, and overwhelming force. The Hebrew phrase here, literally "a thousand thousands" and "ten thousand ten thousands," speaks of an almost immeasurable multitude, far beyond simple human enumeration. This hyperbolic language is a common feature in apocalyptic literature, designed to impress upon the reader the might and majesty of the divine King. Daniel's vision is set within a broader narrative of earthly empires rising and falling, contrasted sharply with the eternal, unshakeable kingdom of God, whose throne is established with such an innumerable host of attendants.
Understanding the "myriads upon myriads" who serve God should profoundly impact our worship and our view of His power. It reminds us that our God is not small or limited. He commands an infinite army of heavenly beings, ready to execute His will at a word. This truth should instill both reverence and confidence within us; reverence for His awesome power, and confidence that if such a God is for us, who can truly stand against us? It encourages us to live with bold faith, knowing that the God of angelic hosts is our Protector and our King, ruling over all things.
