Misread 20: Already Not Yet

Do not force biblical prophecy and promises into a rigid framework of either "already fulfilled" or "only future." Scripture presents a more nuanced reality where certain promises have begun to be realized in the present, while their complete and final fulfillment still awaits a future culmination. This means that we can experience the initial outpouring of God’s redemptive work now, while simultaneously looking forward to its perfect completion.
This understanding is clearly illustrated in several passages. For instance, Acts 2:16-21 declares that the events of Pentecost, specifically the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, are "what was uttered through the prophet Joel," signaling that Joel's prophecy of God pouring out His Spirit has commenced. Yet, Romans 8:18-25 speaks of "the sufferings of this present time" and how creation still "groans," indicating an ongoing anticipation for "the glory that is to be revealed to us" and the "redemption of our bodies." Similarly, 1 John 3:2 affirms that believers are "God’s children now," possessing a present reality of adoption, but also states, "when he appears we shall be like him," pointing to a future transformation and full likeness to Christ that has "not yet appeared." These scriptures collectively show that God's plan unfolds in stages, with an inaugurated fulfillment that does not negate a still-to-come consummation.
This "already but not yet" perspective profoundly shapes our Christian hope. It prevents us from dismissing present experiences of God's power and presence, recognizing them as authentic, though partial, fulfillments of His promises. It also safeguards us from discouragement when we still observe brokenness and suffering in the world or within ourselves, reminding us that the ultimate glory and complete redemption are still ahead. Your faith is therefore grounded in the ongoing work of God in the present, even as your hope is firmly fixed on the certainty of His future, perfected plan for creation and for all believers.
