Memorial Sacrifices Flawed
Hebrews 10:18 declares, "Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin." This verse is a powerful declaration of the finality and sufficiency of Christ's atoning work. It teaches that once true, complete forgiveness has been secured, the very purpose for which sacrifices were instituted vanishes. The Old Testament sacrifices were temporary measures, pointing forward to a greater reality. They served to cover sins, providing a provisional means of atonement, but they could never truly take away sin or perfect the worshiper. Their continual repetition underscored their inadequacy; if they were truly effective, they would have ceased. The cessation of sacrifices, therefore, is a direct consequence and proof of the complete forgiveness achieved through Christ.
The historical context of the Old Covenant sacrifices reveals their nature as a shadow, not the substance. They were object lessons, illustrating the gravity of sin and the necessity of a blood atonement. Every animal sacrifice was a grim reminder that sin demands death, and that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. However, Hebrews meticulously argues that these sacrifices were inherently flawed because "it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins" (Hebrews 10:4). They served as a "reminder of sins every year" (Hebrews 10:3), not a permanent solution. Christ's single, perfect sacrifice, offered "once for all" (Hebrews 10:10), fulfilled and superseded every Old Covenant offering. He did away with the first covenant's sacrificial system to establish the new, based on His perfect obedience and ultimate self-offering. To reinstitute animal sacrifices, even as a 'memorial,' would diminish the unparalleled efficacy and finality of Christ's work, implying that His sacrifice was somehow incomplete or insufficient to communicate its own profound truth.
For us as believers today, this truth has profound implications. We live in the era of the New Covenant, where access to God is direct and the forgiveness of sins is absolute, secured by the finished work of Christ. We do not need rituals or animal sacrifices to remember or understand His atonement; we have the Holy Spirit, the written Word of God, and the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper, which are New Covenant memorials. The New Testament provides a clear and accessible account of Christ's life, death, and resurrection, making His atoning work understandable to all who seek it. Our focus should be on resting in the complete forgiveness we have in Christ and living lives that reflect the new creation we have become, rather than looking back to shadows that have been definitively replaced by the glorious reality of our Savior.
