Love - Great Command

The statement that "love fulfills the shape of covenant faithfulness" is a profound declaration, suggesting that love is not merely an emotion but the very essence that completes and brings to fruition the promises and obligations of God's covenant with humanity. The two great commandments, as articulated by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-40, explicitly state, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... You shall love your neighbor as yourself." These words highlight that love for God and love for our fellow human beings are intrinsically linked and together form the core of faithfulness within God's covenant.
This understanding is critical because Jesus intentionally gathers the entirety of the Torah (the Law) and the Prophets around this concept of wholehearted love for God and neighbor. Far from replacing the extensive teachings of the Old Testament, these "greatest commandments" serve to reveal the inherent form and ultimate purpose of those sacred writings.
