Kingdom - Allegiance to Lord Jesus

In Acts 17:7, it is said of early believers, "They are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." This statement reveals that the confession "Jesus is Lord" was, from its earliest days, understood as an assertion of Jesus's ultimate authority and kingship, superseding all other earthly powers. It means that Jesus holds supreme sovereignty, predating and overriding any human ruler or dominion.
For the original hearers, particularly within the Roman Empire, such a declaration was profoundly impactful and inherently subversive. Roman citizens were expected to affirm "Caesar is Lord" as a public display of loyalty to the emperor and the state. Therefore, proclaiming "Jesus is Lord" was not a private religious sentiment but a direct and public challenge to the absolute authority claimed by Rome. The early church's confession fundamentally relativized the power and claims of prevailing empires by elevating Jesus to the ultimate position of King, placing allegiance to Him above all other allegiances. Today, understanding that the confession "Jesus is Lord" is a public declaration of allegiance invites believers to recognize the comprehensive scope of Jesus's authority. It is not merely a cognitive assent to a theological truth but a commitment that reshapes one's outlook on all earthly powers and systems. This confession reminds believers that their ultimate loyalty belongs to Jesus, and His reign transcends and ultimately judges all human institutions and claims to absolute power. It informs one's priorities and actions, encouraging a life lived in confidence of His ultimate reign, even amidst competing allegiances and demands from the world.
