Jesus Speaks of Gehenna

Jesus issues a severe warning in Matthew 5:22, stating, "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire."
The Greek term translated here as “hell of fire” is *Gehenna* (γέεννα). This word, which appears 11 times in the New Testament—all of them from the lips of Jesus—refers to the Hinnom Valley, a literal place just south of ancient Jerusalem. In the Old Testament, particularly in Jeremiah, the Hinnom Valley was notorious as a site where Canaanite and apostate Israelites offered human sacrifices, including their own children, to the god Molech (Jeremiah 7:31; 19:6). Because of these abhorrent practices, it became a cursed and defiled place. By Jesus' day, it had become a continually burning rubbish dump where fires smoldered, worms consumed waste, and the air was often thick with smoke, stench, and the cries of those suffering from various ailments. It thus served as a vivid and visceral metaphor for ultimate, perpetual judgment and destruction.
This imagery deeply shapes our understanding of divine justice and God's holiness. Jesus' frequent use of *Gehenna* underscores the gravity of sin, even internal attitudes like anger and contempt, and the real, eternal consequences of rejecting God's ways. It is a powerful call to repentance and a reminder that our actions and innermost thoughts have eternal weight. Such a strong warning should not only instill a healthy fear of the Lord but also deepen our appreciation for grace and the urgent need to live in obedience and love toward God and one another.
