Jesus Saved Israel from Egypt

Jude opens his letter with a stark reminder to his readers in Jude 5: “Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.” This is a profoundly significant statement. We usually attribute the Exodus deliverance to Yahweh, to God the Father. But Jude unequivocally states that it was Jesus who saved Israel out of Egypt. This isn't merely a theological abstraction; it’s a direct assertion of Christ’s pre-existence and active role in redemptive history from its earliest stages.
In the Old Testament, the deliverer of Israel from Egyptian bondage is consistently identified as Yahweh, the Lord. Passages like Exodus 6:6-7 and Deuteronomy 4:34 emphasize God's mighty hand and outstretched arm. However, various biblical texts also speak of God's 'Presence,' the 'Angel of the Lord,' or even 'God' himself as the agent of deliverance. For example, Exodus 23:20-23 speaks of an Angel who will go before Israel, in whom God's name dwells. This pre-incarnate activity of Jesus, working in unity with the Father, underscores the consistent nature of the triune God in salvation history. Jude attributes this pivotal act of salvation directly to Jesus, revealing a deeper dimension of His eternal deity and involvement in the foundational events of Israel's faith.
This truth should profoundly shape our worship and understanding of Christ. If Jesus was the divine agent who delivered Israel from slavery, then our trust in His power to deliver us from sin and death is all the more secure. This passage encourages us to see Jesus not just as the Savior of the New Covenant, but as the eternal God intimately involved in all of salvation’s grand narrative from the very beginning. His consistent power and faithfulness across millennia offer us immense hope and a firm foundation for our faith, knowing that the same divine rescuer of ancient Israel is our personal rescuer today.
