Jerusalem's Greater Guilt
The prophet Ezekiel communicates a profoundly disturbing truth about Judah's spiritual condition. Here, in the allegory of two sisters, Oholah (Samaria, representing the Northern Kingdom of Israel) and Oholibah (Jerusalem, representing the Southern Kingdom of Judah), God reveals the depth of their betrayal. Ezekiel 23:11 declares that when Oholibah witnessed her sister Oholah's downfall, she did not learn from it but instead descended into even greater corruption. Her "lusting" and "whoring," biblical metaphors for idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness, exceeded that of Samaria's. This is a stark portrayal of escalating spiritual degradation.
The specific exacerbation of Jerusalem’s sin lies in its context. Jerusalem, Oholibah, was the very city where God had chosen to place His name. It housed the Temple, the sacred dwelling place of God, and was the seat of the Davidic covenant, promising an enduring dynasty. For Jerusalem to engage in such profound spiritual betrayal, given the immense privileges and direct revelation it had received, constituted a far more egregious offense in the eyes of God. Samaria’s idolatry, while wicked, did not occur in the very sanctuary of God’s presence. Jerusalem’s actions were a direct defilement of the holy space and a public rejection of the God who had uniquely blessed them.
This ancient judgment carries a resonant truth for believers today. When we, who have received the fullness of God's revelation in Christ and have His Spirit dwelling within us, choose to chase after the idols of this world, our sin is likewise magnified. Our privileged position as children of God and temples of the Holy Spirit means that our rebellion is not merely an ignorance of God's ways but a direct affront to His indwelling presence. The call then is to live in a manner worthy of the sacred dwelling God has made within us, remembering that with greater understanding and privilege comes greater responsibility to uphold our covenant with Him.
